Gynaecomastia Surgery
Male Breast Reduction
All men have breast tissues in proportion to their chest walls but when a man has a higher percentage of breast tissue, it can then give their breasts a feminine look. It can be due to many varied reasons including any hormone imbalance as well as side effects from certain medications, however, in many cases there is no detectable issue or abnormality, yet the problem remains and it leaves men feeling uncomfortable and unconfident.
Male Breast reduction surgery (Gynaecomastia surgery) helps with the removal of excess tissue, leaving men with more natural chests and no feminine features or excess flesh. Male breast reduction is a surgery offered when exercise, diet and other regular methods to minimise the size of the breasts has had no impact.
Are you a suitable candidate for a gynaecomastia surgery?
There are many different circumstances which could lead to a man believing he needs breast reduction surgery. Male breast reduction could be right for you if:
- You are a healthy weight, fit and exercise regularly but your breasts seem too large
- You are uncomfortable with the size of your breasts
- Continuous physical exercise seems to make no difference to the size of your breasts
If you have any discomfort or self-consciousness about your breasts and are considering surgery it makes sense to get in touch and talk to our team to find out more about your options. Any level of self-consciousness linked to an abnormal breast tissue can be distressing and if your other efforts haven’t worked, discussing surgery is a good option.
Preparation and Recovery from Male Breast Reduction
All patients undergo a full consultation before any surgery is agreed and this is the time you can also discuss any worries or concerns you may have about the procedure. Gynaecomastia surgery might be combined with liposuction to give an even better finish to your enlarged breasts and this would be discussed at the time of initial consultation. Nothing is agreed until you are 100% happy and sure that male breast reduction is the best option for you.
Male breast reduction surgery is carried out under general anaesthesia and you will usually need to stay one to two nights in the hospital. Most patients are ready to go home after a one night stay though.. You will need up to 2 weeks off work and should not drive for around a week. You should also avoid exercise for up to a month. These are general guidelines however, and your individual aftercare plan will state how you should care for your body post-procedure.
